How to Disassemble a Samurai Sword
Disassembling a samurai sword requires care and patience. For genuine or valuable collectibles, it’s best done by professionals. Here are the basic steps for your reference:
Tools Needed:
-
Soft cloth or towel (to protect the sword and surface)
-
Small wooden or rubber hammer (to assist disassembly)
-
Thin stick or small screwdriver (to push out the mekugi peg)
Steps:
-
Prepare your workspace
Lay a soft cloth on a clean, flat surface to avoid scratching or slipping. -
Remove the mekugi peg
The mekugi peg secures the handle (Tsuka) to the tang (Nakago).-
Find the mekugi hole on the handle side, gently push or tap the peg out using a stick or screwdriver.
-
Be gentle to avoid damaging the handle or tang.
-
-
Remove the handle (Tsuka)
After removing the peg, gently wiggle and pull the handle outward. If it’s tight, use the rubber hammer lightly to loosen it. -
Remove the guard (Tsuba)
The tsuba usually slides off the tang once the handle is removed. If stuck, gently tap the tang to loosen it. -
Remove the pommel (Kashira) and collar (Fuchi)
These metal fittings at the ends of the handle can be removed once the handle is off.
Notes:
-
Don’t use excessive force during disassembly to avoid damage.
-
Keep all parts carefully to avoid loss.
-
Reassembly is the reverse process, securing the mekugi peg last.
-
This is a great opportunity to clean and maintain your sword thoroughly.
